How Solar Works
When the sun is shining, electricity travels from the panels through wires into a piece of equipment called an “inverter.” The inverter converts the DC electricity produced by the panels into the type of power your house uses (called Alternating Current, or AC). After the inverter converts the electricity, it then travels through a dedicated wire into your home’s electrical panel. From that point, all unused electricity generated by your solar panels travels back through the power lines and into the utility company’s power grid.
Solar Panels
Solar panels are the most obvious part of the system. They sit on your roof and collect the unlimited energy supplied by the sun every day.
Inverter
The inverter converts the energy collected by the solar panels and turns it into usable electricity, which powers your home. Inverters can be a separate piece (as shown here), or they can be micro-inverters, which are part of each individual solar panel.
Meter
The meter is what measures your electricity usage. When using solar energy, your meter will frequently run “backward” as you sell your excess electricity back to the local utility company.
Utility Grid
The power lines and the whole huge system that supplies electricity to your entire region. Your home is still connected to the grid for times when it needs electricity that you are not currently producing (mostly at night).

*For systems installed through 2032, you may be able to recover up to 30% of your system cost through tax incentives.
Utility and Tax Incentives
Federal, state, and local governments understand the importance of sustainable energy and the high costs associated with traditional power sources. Unfortunately, utility companies can’t afford to maintain their infrastructure costs as homes use more and more power. That’s why homeowners like you can save 50% or more on energy costs with special utility and tax incentives.
Federal Investment Tax Credit – 30%
The solar investment tax credit (ITC) is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in the income taxes that a homeowner claiming the credit would otherwise pay the federal government. The ITC is based on 30% of the cost to install solar for systems installed in 2023–2032. Tax credits are not offered for those leasing a system.
*Ask your representative about which incentive you’re eligible to receive. Please consult a tax advisor on your ability to claim these nonrefundable tax credits.
Arizona Incentives
The Residential Arizona Solar Tax Credit reimburses homeowners 25% of the solar panel cost—up to $1,000—from their personal income tax in the year the system was installed. If the amount of the credit exceeds a taxpayer’s liability in the year of installation or beyond, the unused portion of the credit may be carried forward for up to five years. You might also qualify for utility-specific incentives.
Nevada Incentives
Nevada has a favorable net metering policy compared to other states. A solar power system sized at 25 kW or less can get a monthly credit for excess energy production at 75% of retail rates. However, the customer can’t accumulate net metering credits that exceed 100% of their annual consumption, meaning a solar panel system that overproduces energy would not yield extra benefits.
NV Energy, the largest utility company in Nevada, offers an Energy Storage Incentive Program with rebates for battery systems coupled with solar panels. The incentive rate depends on the customer’s electric tariff: time-of-use (TOU) or non-TOU tariffs. The incentive is available for solar battery systems with a rated power output between 4 kW and 100 kW. The rebate is limited to 50% of project costs up to $3,000 for TOU tariff customers and up to $1,500 for other customers.
Property Tax Exemption
Installing solar panels on your home increases its value by up to 20 times your annual energy bill savings. We don’t think you should be penalized for your sustainable decision. Until the end of 2024, new solar installations will be subject to no additional property taxes based on their assessed value.
FAQs
Is my house a good candidate for solar?
Three main factors determine whether your home is a good candidate for solar energy:
- Sunlight exposure: Your roof gets a good amount of direct sunlight and is not overly obstructed by shade.
- Roof orientation: For the areas we serve, south-facing solar panels are ideal for maximum sun exposure.
- Roof condition, shape, and size: Your roof should be in good condition before installing solar panels. The ideal roof shape for solar is a simple rectangle-shaped “gable” roof so panels can be installed without any concerns about space.
How does the installation process work?
Most solar installations can take up to 60 days from the signed contract to completion. We keep the homeowner up-to-date and informed if any project delays occur. If you ever have a question, your project coordinator is only a phone, text, or email away.
- Free Consultation: We can examine your energy needs and make an initial determination about whether your home is a good candidate for solar panels.
- Assign a Project Coordinator and Conduct a Site Survey: Once the agreement is signed, we introduce you to your dedicated project coordinator who will schedule a site survey to ensure the installation goes smoothly.
- Secure Permits and Approvals: Your project coordinator is responsible for securing HOA approval and city permits, coordinating work with the utility company, and scheduling required inspections. All of the necessary paperwork is completed for you so the system complies with building and electrical codes and industry best practices.
- Install and Activate the System: Once all the permits have been secured, your project coordinator will schedule a time to install your home solar system. After a final inspection, your system is turned on to start generating clean, renewable energy.
- Provide Ongoing Customer Service: From the initial meeting through the life of your solar system, our team is available to answer your questions and address your concerns. Your satisfaction is our #1 goal.
